NASTURTIUM
(Tropaeolum)
The nasturtium bloom is so delicate, seems unlikely for a cut flower. Or so I thought. There are lots of them in our backyard. The impulse to cut one was a surprise. Is it that finally we've gotten some rain? The yard looks happy.
Of course Frankie and Twinkie have been staying in, staying close and curling up next to each other, in the evening while the news is on, and Weather Center. Twinkie sinks into my lap and Frankie, always more stand-offish, stays close by on his chair. They don't know what it is, but something big is happening. I think they sense it.
Nasturtiums come up so quickly, then gone. I never expected one to last so long. It still looks fresh, there on the windowsill in the kitchen after maybe a week.
The weather has been more or less like the news. After our bone dry February and some days almost like summer, now we have the dreary sky, periods of rain, heavy at times, a clotch of hail. It's not too difficult to shelter in place. I sleep late. The cats are good at this, sleeping right along on top of me. I wonder if they know that beyond just staying warm sometimes I'm actually awake.
Anyone who already has some sort of meditative practice might feel that not going out except for necessities is an opportunity. The presence of fellow meditators, while an aid to practice, is not necessary. The core of it is an inner experience, immeasurable. There are no limits of either space or time. In fact Dogen Zenji refers to continuous practice. Chopping vegetables, having a cat nap with Frankie and Twinkie, it never ends.
Might as well continue.
